updates (since 2012?)

Reading over my last few posts, I realized that I never gave an update on all my very ambitious New Year resolutions from 2012 (so long ago!) So here’s the dumb list I made and where I currently stand on each item:

1. I will not put myself down. Ever.  I’m stupid and this resolution was stupid.

2. I will be on time for everything, all of the time. HA. HAHAHA. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

3. I will hone my cooking skills by cooking at home more often. I’ve actually been better about cooking at home and trying out new recipes. Yay!

4. I will be more diligent in updating my blog. …you know the answer to this one.

5. I will read more books. I’ve indeed kept this one. Currently, I’m reading “Great Expectations.”

6. I will take better care of my health. If by “taking better care of my health,” I meant removing my contacts and washing my face every night  sometimes, then this was a success.

2012 Apartment Goals!

1. Buy a bed frame (do this soon!) I just did this, like, 2 weeks ago.

2. Hang shelving unit in the living room No. But I did replace the existing bookshelf. Post coming soon!

3. Scrape peeling paint in bathroom; repaint Absolutely not.

4. Plant a large indoor houseplant, and keep it alive! Though not large, I’ve had several small plants die on me since this, but one is still alive (for now)! Success in my book!

5. Find or create a headboard Still working on this.

6. Replace bedroom rugs Did this! Kind of.

7. Hang curtains Yes!

8. Frame and hang artwork Yes, but still have more to do…

9. Find a better TV stand No, and it’s driving me crazy!

10. Get rid of unused furniture Mostly.

11. Declutter!! (nintendo games, dvds, closets, everything!) Did this and already need to do it again.

12. Conjure up a cheap/fun backsplash in kitchen Put this one aside for a while, but may think about it again.

And this is why I don’t make resolutions. More empty promises to come? Check back to find out!

time flies when you’re procrastinating

Holy shit. Was my last post really in March? I have lots of making up to do! There haven’t been a lot of new developments in the apartment since then (I need more money and more motivation!), but 2012 was still a busy year for us. Here’s a look back of my favorite events and happenings last year.

March – Radiohead concert in St. Louis

Evan and I spent a weekend in St. Louis to see Radiohead. Our seats were in the very back of the arena (because I bought them like the day after they went on sale) but somehow Evan made friends with a guy who had extra box seats, so he invited us to enjoy the rest of the show with him…and a private bathroom! It was awesome. We stayed with our friend, Les, who has an amazing view of the Arch from his living room window! After touring the Budweiser brewery, we spent the rest of our last day thrifting in the Cherokee Antique Row district. I think the only thing I came back with was an October 1986 edition of Playboy.

May – joined a bowling league!

Even though we are not at all good, Evan, our friend Johnny, and I joined a fun bowling league for restaurants and bars. Our team came in 3rd place (out of 4 teams). Whatever, at least we weren’t last! Go Laser Wolves!

July – visit from my sister

My sister lives in Istanbul and was able to take about a month off to come back to the States. She stayed with us for several days in Lexington and we then spent a very relaxing weekend at a friend’s lakehouse at Lake Cumberland.

September – met Tom Green

Hell yeah. He performed at Comedy Off Broadway in Lexington and I stayed after the show to get a picture. He asked me how I liked the show and I said it was awesome–I had a conversation with Tom Green.

October – went to Big Blue Madness

If you know anything about UK basketball, you know this is a big deal. People camp in line for days to get tickets to this. I didn’t know I was even going until the day of when my coworker, Laura, came up with an extra ticket and invited me to go. It really was madness.

November – Passion Pit concert

Evan and I went to a Passion Pit concert in Covington, KY. We also walked through the Newport Aquarium, where I touched a fucking shark. Evan was most excited about getting to smoke in the bars.

Honorable Mentions: my eleven-year-old car hit 100,000 miles, we played in a skeeball league, and I finally got classy and got an iPhone!

Looking forward to 2013 and a few more blog posts. Until next time!

mid-century modern

Lately I’ve found myself gravitating more towards mid-century modern homes, buildings, and architecture. I’ve always had an affinity towards MCM furniture, but have focused primarily on homes built in the 19th century or around the turn of the 20th century. I love the apartment I currently live in, which was built in 1800, but  now I’m really craving the streamlined, minimalist qualities of an MCM home. I especially love the designs that embrace the relationship between outdoors and indoors with large windows and structural features that extend beyond the indoor perimeters. Of course, living in one those beautiful homes would mean moving to the suburbs and I just love being downtown, so this will remain a fantasy for at least a few more years.  This is my MCM porn. Ohh yeah.

This was a 1960’s office building renovated to accommodate a living space. Two of my favorite things all rolled up in one delicious space!

Seriously. I’m drooling.

One of my favorite blogs devoted to mid-century modern design is mid-century MODERN LOVE. A couple weeks ago the author, Brandy, held a giveaway for any awesome print by Visual Philosophy and guess who won! This is the one I chose.

It looks terrific in person. I’m so excited to frame it and get it up!

Gotta run, the game’s on. GO CATS!

resolutions

Brrr…it’s a cold day in Kentucky, guys. I’m wrapped in a blanket on my couch, refusing to go back outside, ever. I can avoid the weather for the rest of the night, but I think it’s time to stop avoiding my blogging duties. Truth is, I kind of started to hate this blog and really wanted to just forget it exists. My writing style sucks and I can never come up with good ideas for posts. That being said, I want to embrace a new attitude about myself in 2012 to hopefully gain a renewed, confident outlook in my personal life, and in turn, my blog life. Starting with:

1. I will not put myself down. Ever.

2. I will be on time for everything, all of the time.

3. I will hone my cooking skills by cooking at home more often.

4. I will be more diligent in updating my blog.

5. I will read more books.

6. I will take better care of my health.

Because of my innate inability to reach my goals, I usually don’t make New Year resolutions; however, I believe I’m finally mature enough to challenge myself and better myself in the process. The time thing will definitely be the biggest challenge of all!

Now for the exciting stuff:

Yep, lots to do in the next 361 days…starting now!

café table

So I’ve been in the market for a new coffee table for a very long time. I’ve been using an old roommate’s white wicker chest as a make-shift for almost 4 years. I repeat, four years! It was always thought of as temporary until I got my hands on a great coffee table.

Problem is, I could never put my finger on which style I craved: modern? antique? simple? weird? Just make a decision, already! Many meals are consumed on this couch and I just wanted a large, flat surface on which to set drinks, plates, condiments, what-have-you. I’ve had it with wobbly, tilty glasses and ketchup bottles!

Today I’m proud to announce that I’ve finally pulled the trigger. My only requirements: long, flat, and $30 or under. Say hello to this chunk of goodness:

Found on Craigslist (of course) for $25. Yesss! Now, I won’t lie and tell you that I love this table, because I don’t. But it masculines-up the living room, looks kinda cool and, most importantly, will allow Evan and me to watch Californication while gorging ourselves without fear of my wine glass toppling over due to faulty crevices. Ah, how much simpler life will be.
